End of 2010 Reflections

This year I have learned a lot of things in all subjects and in general as well. I think that I have also improved my attitude towards learning in general. I have participated in a lot of activities this year including: Rock Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Extension Guitar Group and Inter-Intermediate Rugby.

Maths: I have leaned a lot of things in maths this year, including: how to divide decimals,  to find line of symmetry, expand and simplify expressions, I have learned to find unknowns in inverse operations and much more.

English: In English this year I have learned quite a lot, including: I have learned how to completely check and edit my work for spelling and grammar mistakes, I have learned how to correctly write a piece of argument writing to the best of my abilities.

Goals for Next Year:

  • To get over 50% (pass) on all of my tests next year.
  • To use my knowledge I have learned at Te Awamutu Intermediate at Hamilton Boys High School next year.
  • To get all of my work finished on time.

Science Fair

This term we had a whole school science fair. I decided to do my topic on What effect will using different liquids have on the growth of plants. I chose to do my project on what effect will using different liquids have on the growth of plants because I have always wondered how long plants would survive living on liquids other than water. I did my experiment by getting four plants all of the same species and all healthy. I labeled them according to what liquid I would be watering that plant with. I kept them in the same place for three weeks, watering them with the same liquid and the same amount of liquid every day and measured them every week. My outcome was that my Water plant continued healthy for the whole three weeks, the Raro plant was average but slowly dying, the Coke plant was drooping and wilted and the sprite plant was dead. In the end I found out that a little bit of sugar is ok in plants because it gives it a double shot of glucose (which is basically what sugar is) but if you give them too much it will get an overdose and kill off the roots.

Week 6, Term 2 2010

This week I have…

This week in fabric tech arts we started sewing our sweatshirts and I learned what the meaning of most of the clothing care labels are. This week in English we learned how to do note taking and report writing of our notes, with our note taking we have to write down just the keywords e.g. instead of  “the cheetah’s top speed is 80 mph,” you would write “Cheetah – Top Speed – 80 mph.” In maths I learned how to count the number of decimal places in an equation to determine the amount of decimals in the answer so .45×8.78 says that there must be 4 decimal places in the answer.

Week 2, Term 2, 2010

This week I have learned how to do explanation writing. Explanation writing is a piece of writing that explains how something works or what something is. In band I learned how to play Star Wars. In tech arts I learned how to play 12 bar blues on the keyboard and guitar. In maths we are learning to do tree diagrams. I also decided what I am doing for science fair and have started researching it. My question is: ‘What effect will different liquids have on the growth of a plant’. We also did a group science fair project on paper planes our group question was: What effect will different wing designs have on the planes flight length’. We found out that a wider wing span helps the plane glide for longer.

Knee Boarding

One scorching hot day my family and I were camping at the beautiful Lake Whakamaru with some of our friends from Taupo. It was so hot that you could fry an egg on the concrete so we all decided to go out on Lance’s boat and maybe go knee boarding and biscuiting. We went and got all of our puffy life jackets and towed the boat to the boat ramp.

The boat is in the water, we tie the knee board onto the back of the boat, Lance checks if Logan (my friend) is all ready and off we go. Speeding down the lake, Logan boarding on the back. He was really good and I mean really good. He stayed on for like 10 minutes and even went over the wakes. But now it’s my turn!

I’m out on the lake waiting silently looking at the hundreds of trees and flying birds surrounding the lake it’s an astonishing sight. Then Lance gives me the signal and the boat starts moving. He starts off not that fast but speeds up. As the boat starts moving I pull myself up onto my knees I start to wobble but I keep myself steady. I quickly undo the strap and pull it over my knees. Now I grab the handle and it pulls me strait over the front and I eat a lot of water.

As I sit out on the water waiting for Lance I take one last glance of the beautiful scenery before we go back in for lunch.
